Famous Artist Uses Work To Raise Awareness For Marine Wildlife And Pay Tribute To Shooting Victims
Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park boasts a beautiful piece of artwork in the form of an impressive mural, featuring manatees along with various species of fish. The credit for this painting belongs to Robert Wyland, a artist who is famous for his Whaling Walls, of which he has completed one hundred projects. Eighteen years ago, Wyland painted this 400 square foot mural and recently came back to make some updates to his work. The newest addition is a sea turtle, and Wyland has a special purpose for adding to his long completed mural, and his motivation is two-fold. First of all, he is paying tribute to Gina, a student who was tragically killed at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland during the shooting in February. Gina was also an artist and loved marine life. Secondly, Wyland wishes to influence those who see his artwork, and to convey the news of the plight of these amazing and little-known creatures. He believes that by sparking the interest of visitors from around the work, it will instill a passion for conservation and ensure that this dedication remains for generations to come.
