Letter to the Editor: Will the BLM help or harm threatened Mojave desert tortoises?

1990, the mojave desert tortoise was officially listed as a threatened and declining species under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Despite being placed under this legal protection, this species along with many others still continue to decline. Under this Act, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and other agencies must take positive action and use their establishments to implement and further the conservation and population recovery of the various tortoise species listed on Endangered Species Act.

The BLM currently manages much of the land utilised by U.S. tortoises and therefore play a crucial role in whether the conservation of these species is actually happening. BLM stated that they acknowledge their obligation for tortoise conservation and the decisions they need to make.

When these decisions occur soon, the BLM will demonstrate whether it is fulfilling its Endangered Species Act duty on Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and tortoise conservation.
