Community Unites To Rescue Incredibly Rare Nest From Inclement Devastating Tide

It was only by chance that a fisherman happened to discover an endangered Chelonia mydas nesting for one of the first times ever on Boambee beach, but thanks to his diligence, Mick Phillips reported the nest to the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). However, dangerous weather conditions were creating what is known as a king tide, threatening to destroy the nest; in addition, the nest was located in a prime off-leash dog area, which was severely threatening the survival of the eggs. What happened next was just as amazing. Local residents teamed up with the NPWS to construct a safety barrier composed of sandbags and ditches, as well as fencing to protect the nest from predators. They have hopes that the sea turtle will return to lay another clutch of eggs and the population in the area will begin to rebound. Park rangers will continue to monitor the weather conditions as well as the safety of the nest until the hatchlings emerge. What an inspiring story of teamwork and citizens’ dedication to conservation.
