Volunteers of the Turtle Watch Continue to Contribute Massive Efforts Towards Sea Turtle Conservation With Awe-inspiring Success

At barely 6 AM in the morning there is activity on Longboat Key beach. As the sun rises one will observe multiple figures quietly working on something in the sand. A closer look will reveal a newly discovered nest of sea turtle eggs, and a volunteer meticulously covering the nest while installing a small wooden stake to mark the treasures in the sand. These dedicated volunteers belong to the Longboat Key Turtle Watch, and their job is to comb the beaches searching for nests and removing trash that could potentially harm the sea turtles. For nearly 50 years the Turtle Watch has watched over these beaches and has been highly involved with enacting laws to benefit and preserve the sea turtles that frequent the area. Perhaps one of their most important achievements is in their public outreach activities, such as fundraising and open houses. They have been surprisingly effective in gaining the support of the local residents and plan to continue their successful operations to further conserve sea turtles around the state of Florida.
