Incredible Discovery of a Once-thought Extinct Species in India a Remarkable Success for Conservation

Nilssonia nigricans, known as the Black Soft-shell turtle, is classified by the IUCN as extinct in the wild; however, deep in the marshes of an Akuk village in Wokha district, Nagaland, this has been proven otherwise. Lansothung Lotha, a Forest Ranger, was alerted to the possible existence of this turtle due to observing photos on social media, and along with the assistance of Steve Odyuo, founder of Natural Nagas, and conservationists Suren Enny, Zanbenthung Enny from Wokha town and Nokten, were able to rescue the animal from a villager after much convincing. The turtle was then taken to Nagaland Zoological Park in Dimapur. Lotha believes that there are likely more of this species residing in Nagaland’s incredibly diverse ecosystem, and that dedicated efforts need to be made to preserve such a delicate and vulnerable habitat in order that these amazing creatures can make a comeback.
