Protected Sea Turtles Are Still Being Caught Illegally in Jakarta

Although sea turtles are endangered and protected by law on Lembata Island, most of them end up being caught by fishermen to be sold on the fish market for their meat. Since no action is taken against this, Jakarta Animal Aid Network started a new program for sea turtle protection.

The wood turtle, Glyptemys insculpta, wood turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) takes a long time to reach sexual maturity, has a low fecundity, but a high adult survival rate. They become sexually mature between 14 and 18 years of age. Mating activity peaks in the spring and again in the fall.
