Unique Canine Works to Save Sea Turtles

Could a dog really do anything to actually protect turtles, rather than eat them? Captain Ron is a Pocket Beagle specially trained to sniff out sea turtle eggs buried below the surface of the sand. He uses the scent of the mucous covering on the eggs to find each nest, whereupon scientists are able to collect their data. Pepe Peruyero says that Captain Ron is the world’s only egg-sniffing canine, and he owns and trains the dog himself. Disney’s conservation director Anne Savage will make a presentation on the dogs success at the Florida Marine Turtle Permit Holders Meeting. She hopes that using Captain Ron as an ambassador for conservation will help bring awareness to the world’s sea turtles.
