The Plight of the Western Pond Turtle in Oregon

Actinemys marmorata is an endangered species in Oregon and was once near extinction with only 150 remaining individuals left state-wide. Today this species still suffers from habitat destruction and degradation, urbanization, development for human habitation and also over-use of water sources. American western states and Mexico have been working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and their SAFE program (Save Animals From Extinction) to develop a range-wide conservation plan and conduct a species assessment.
