Spotlight on Sea Turtles in Lebanon

Every year, without exception, sea turtles lay eggs on the Tyre Beach Nature Reserve in Lebanon. Hasan Hamza, the manager of the reserve, wants to help protecting and saving these beautiful creatures. Sea pollution along with accidental by-catch plays against these turtles every year. An overall lack of cultural awareness among fishermen enhance this woes as well. Fishermen do not hesitate to kill a turtle that would got caught by mistake in their nets. The reserve is now starting to locate and mark the turtles’ nests so as to make sure hatchlings will make it safely to the sea. The reserve is now working on raising awareness among the youth. Knowing the importance of sea turtles for Lebanon’s biodiversity, they made May 5 the national day of sea turtles.
